Been waiting for this link. Barring Jan, all our CB’s are naturally right sided. Ake, as a PL experienced natural LCB makes more sense. Add to that, I think he’s classed as home grown too. When we had Wimmer, we had a like for like LCB in waiting.

Doesn't float my boat particularly. Lascelles would be a better fit IMO.

As others have said, I really can't see Jan Vertonghen leaving Spurs until he's put out to pasture in his footballing dotage. He's never so much as hinted at discontent or greater ambitions and seems a quiet guy who likes a settled existence. He's been with us for seven seasons after being with Ajax for six.

As for Nathan Aké, having a Dutchman with dreads always marks you out as a winner -- Edgar Davids, Ruud Gullit -- bring him in.

He's a really good defender who isn't flattered by playing for a Bournemouth team that has no interest in defending.

Makes a lot of sense for a number of reasons. Firstly a really good defender, young, PL experienced and homegrown.

Also unlikely to play much international football with the likes of De Ligt, Van Dijk and De Vrij being ahead of him.

I’ve been impressed by Ake for the last two seasons. Would defo take him, he’s quick, strong and athletic. Good defender.

I am bracing myself for JJ’s info, regarding a crowds favourite, surprise leaving. At this stage of his career, it could be JV?

Some of our mainstays, might feel as though they’ve taken Spurs to strong position. It could be a good time to cash in and get a good pay day for themselves and the club. Plus secure the final stage of their career.

Just locks him in for another year
I wouldn't have thought so actually because they would be offered the option but wouldn't take it up, the fact that they can't take it up is irrelevant I reckon as Bournemouth can't be prevented from doing business because Chelsea have been sanctioned. As far as the player goes I'd be ok with him at Spurs.

I would be gutted to lose JV and I think it’d be a big mistake

I say this with no evidence whatsoever but...

He’s core to the culture I reckon. A true professional who also mixes in some passion and personality. And he’s quality. Keep under all circumstances

I do rate Ake and have been saying to my son he's quality for a couple of seasons now. Great positioning and commitment. But we're both a bit concerned he's too small to deal with set pieces when other teams like Liverpool can throw Matip and Van Dijk in there.

So if Vertonghen leaves this window, Alderweireld supposedly off, talk of Rose wanting to return up north, and reports suggesting we'll listen to offers for Trippier...I have to ask...

Would you not think it highly unlikely that we'd sell the whole of a starting defence in one hit. Far too much upheaval.

I can't see Alderweireld and Vertonghen being sold in the same window. No way.

No thanks. Every time I watch him, he falls asleep at least once and the opposition score. There’s a reason Bournemouth concede so many goals and he is one of them. It would be a mistake.

I think he's a great player and would be a quality successor for Jan. I'd love us to bring him in, have the two of them rotating for a season before Ake takes over as first choice.

Ake would be a good signing. Vertonghen has a year left and is 32. Someone like this to rotate with Jan with a view to taking over in a year (whether Jan leaves or is kept on) makes sense, and allows Sanchez / Foyth to focus on succeeding Alderweireld.

I don’t think it means Jan is off, just that we’re succession planning and this guy is a similar style player who also happens to be homegrown.

I’ve said this quite some times; he would be the ideal replacement for Jan

Most of his games for the Dutch team have been at LB where his main competition is Blind. If Blind's form goes out the window again there's every chance Ake will be playing regularly for them.

Really not sure about him. Looks good 90% of the time but then seems to have the odd lapse.

Obviously Toby’s selling price is out of our hands but losing him for £25m and replacing him with Ake for £40m doesn’t strike me as a very good outcome.

Hmmm ...

Thought he had some kind of first refusal or buy back clause in his contract for Chelsea anyway, if that were the case I doubt we'd get a sniff as they wouldn't let us.

Also hmmm ...

I think he would be a good Jan backup, allowing us to keep players in their best position, and all while he learns under Jan in his last year with us. He does the LCB role, and can play in a three at the back, plus an emergency LB if needed. I can see the up side in Toby going and bringing in Ake, not a direct replacement for the outgoing player, but gives us the left option we need. Especially with Sanchez and Foyth both preferring to play on the right.

Makes me wonder if Dier has had ‘the talk’ and has declined one of the CB roles, hence the talk again of Man Utd saying he is underrated or whatever it was Ole said.
