Honestly I would rather take a bit of flak for a silly gesture than have the world think I was a total fucking idiot who didn't know who Hitler was.

Beyond ridiculous now. Should've just said he didn't think about the seriousness of it and realises now that it's not a laughing matter and apologized. The way it's all played out has made even more of a mockery of things than the gesture was

It’s utterly ludicrous. WW2, the Nazis, The Battle Of Britain, the Spitfire etc etc. Is all massively ingrained on the national conscience. The FA should be ashamed of themselves for believing his excuse. So he means to say he never watched Dads Army, The Great Escape, Where Eagles Dare, Schindlers List, Saving Private Ryan, A Bridge To Far, Captain America, Indiana Jones, Inglorious Basterds, Allo Allo, etc etc etc.

Nazis as bad guys isn’t just limited to GCSE history classes. A massive amount of pop culture features them as the main villains.

That all these FA suits, and Roy fucking Hodgson of all people, are now making excuses for the guy is utterly incredulous.

Tbf he's Welsh so he's never experienced the England supporters band playing The Great Escape for 90 fucking minutes.

He really should have owned up to making a stupid mistake and taken the rap. Although, I can understand him wanting to avoid the outrage and so tried to lie his way out of it.

Ranks right up there with Bill Clinton's 'I didn't think oral sex was sex' and Jeremy Corbyn not being able to get a train seat.

Brits fall for it every fucking time though. Vardy used the ignorance defence when he racially abused an Asian guy and he was let off immediately.

He could do the same think to Son, the press would chalk it up to ignorance and wouldn’t give a shit.

Like they give much of a shit in any case. I reckon if he'd owned up to it, it probably would have died away faster than it has with him trying to deny it.

To be honest I don't think he should have even been charged. It's a stupid gesture and his club should have handled it.

So he escaped a charge.

Hamza Choudhury of Leicester is facing a misconduct charge for tweets he made 6 years ago when he was 15.

Crazy. This doesn't allow for change of world view, personal growth or just normal maturity. Choudhury is being punished as if it happened now, with all we and he knows 5/6 years later - meanwhile Hennessey can get out of a clear Nazi salute by saying he doesn't know about Hitler or the Nazis. Righto. Not like it's taught at school, featured every single day on the History channel, or mentioned online quite often at the moment. Ignorance, it seems, is an excuse, but being a child and not being that aware of the wider world is not.

Same as Andre Gray the other year. Worst bit about both Choudhury and Gray is that an opposition fan (Liverpool/Arsenal respectively) had trawled through their old tweets to get back at them for something that happened during a match against their team. Hennessey just volunteered his Nazi salute.

Apparently Hennessey has an old tweet on his account saying he'd been to a WW1 memorial.

That was possibly when the Wales squad visited a Great War memorial after playing Belgium a few years ago. Maybe. Dunno if he was in that squad.
