Ladies and Gentlemen - Tottenham are a big club and we can draw top players. It just depend on the money.

Said this near enough every year for the past few years. I wish our fans would get out of the mid-table mindset. We're not that club anymore.

Any player in world football would be lucky to play for this club.

Well let's just hope that The Mirror is as full of shit as usual then mate...

Tottenham are looking at 25-year-old Osijek goalkeeper Marko Malenica as a possible backup option if Hugo Lloris leaves the club this summer and Paulo Gazzaniga becomes No 1. (Sunday Mirror) https://t.co/UKZOCgYbuW
They are. Poch said last week that Lloris is #1 and will have an important role at the club for years to come.

It’s Vorm who needs replacing

That’s not the perception of Spurs in France I’m afraid.

Call me crazy but no thanks on Kroos. Yes he has the technical ability but his legs are completely gone with regards to running and speed. No chance in my mind he could play the Poch system.

I wish our board would have that mindset regarding transfers. If you want to be a top club you need to be prepared to pay top club prices. Its not about just splashing the cash and pay silly salaries, but making ambitious, quality investments in needed areas.

And so far the club has not shown he is willing to do that and so we end up with N'obody so far.

Grease the palms of the agents, and the players will come.

Also, be prepared to pay more than £42m as your record signing.

Also, be prepared to pay market rate wages.

Our transfer policy for as long as I can remember bears a striking parallel to the famous 'It's better to fail aiming high....' qoute. I think it's served Levy quite well while he studiously saved up the pennies. I personally hope we lower our sights slightly and go after players who don't see us as a fall back option but rather a club that are ready to take the next step. There are plenty of them out there and we'd stand a good chance of getting some deals done early and giving them time to find their feet in pre season. I won't be at all happy if we're going head to head with Man City for N'Dombele or trying to tempt Rabiot away from Real Madrid. Poch has the ability to develop players from the 2nd tier and that's where I'd like to see us operating.

And even in the 2nd tier department our club failed in recest past massively to secure some good talent.
Where were we when players like Maddison move then...

You need to keep in mind that its not always our decision where a given player ends up.

I have said it before, there are plenty of factors to consider when it comes to transfers in football. As hard as it may be to believe, it is not always our decisions that cause a player to not sign for us.

Maddison for example wanted guaranteed first team minutes, we couldn't guarantee that therefore he signed for Leicester, a team that could. Same can be said for Brooks. We had concrete interest in these players but could not offer the terms they wanted. These things happen.

This mentality that it is always our fault that transfers don't go through is honestly becoming laughable.

True that transfers are not always straight forward. I am working for a football club so I get that.
Still you can judge the past transfer windows if they where succesful or not. And if you don't sign any player, neither first teamers, depth players or prospects...you did something wrong. I think that just needs to be admitted. We did a great job with Dele and e.g. Dier. Since then it is a complete hit and miss so we seem to be scared to go any kind of risks. I see the investment in the stadium limits our activities but for me its not an excuse as missing out on CL footy would cost us far more than one or two new players that highly increase the chances to qualify.

I hope the club proves me wrong this window but the fans have every right to be sceptical about our transfer activities.

If Toby and Eriksen move on it will be a real test of our ambition as to who we bring in. We also have a large Dembele shaped hole to fill. To replace them adequately will require a huge net spend IMO but the upside is that players we go after will see a clear path into the starting XI. That wasn't the case when Maddison was available, but it might be when David Brookes is in a similar situation. I guess we'll find out in a few months time.

Not that my reply was aimed at you but more of the general consensus around transfers, I do agree that we are always somewhat responsible for deals not going through. However in the case of last summer, We had De Jong, Maddison and Brooks being looked at however we didn't sign any of these players and all three came down to the players decision and not ours. I'm pretty sure there will be others that were never mentioned that fell through for the same reasons.

I do feel however that in the upcoming window we will have a shift of policy, and the way in which we do business.

Levy is an extremely shrewd businessman, but he is also extremely intelligent. He knows what we need to take that next big step and I have faith that he will be able to deliver that. He took us from a mid to lower level team all the way up to the top 4, with a world class stadium. No one could've predicted that climb and growth for our club and I really feel like the man deserves credit and patience where it is due. Everything he has done so far has worked out in our favor.

I know that's hard to believe after the last 2 windows, but I really feel like things will be different this time. I won't get my hopes up until the ink dries, but let's see how things pan out once the season is over and done with.

I'm 100% certain we'll be signing a few in the Summer. My concern is that we'll, yet again, be faffing around as deadline day approaches having passed up the opportunity to get some quality deals done early in the window. We're not, IMO, ready to go head to head with the mega clubs on the top flight players. That will be even more obvious if we don't get CL. I also think Levy has to soften his stance a bit with agents like Mendes and Raiola. It's just an unpleasant fact that they have a lot of quality players on their books who enable them to demand ridiculous fees. It's part and parcel of dining at the top table, or aspiring to.

I'll call this too. We won't do it. We will be lucky to bring even one player in who is good enough to slot straight into our starting line up and replace those two or three. The club just don't have the appetite for it. Recent history has told us as much.

Levy is an extremely shrewd businessman, but he is also extremely intelligent.

In my (not inconsiderable) experience, being shrewd and intelligent does not always equal 'good judgement'.

What often gets in the way is character - in this instance, a dogmatic focus on the need to 'win' any negotiation (generally manifesting itself in acting very late in the window, but also including the notion of leaking value/cash to agents), and a generally risk averse approach to transfers

Plus, we might not have much money right now

Hopefully the leopard changes his spots this summer, but we'll be chasing the same players as a bunch of richer, hungrier predators, so I'm not holding my breath

Don't get me wrong, generally he does well, but we're at a tricky point in our development and he's yet to show how he can move us forward. Let's hope he does

I'd give you a 'pessimistic' rating if there was such a thing. I'm sure we'll buy but we'll have to drag ourselves over the CL qualification line before we have any idea who realistic targets are. If we fail to get CL it will be a huge kick up the arse for Levy's transfer tactics in the past 18 months.

Or realistic? ?

We've just been here too many times before. Who was the last player we signed to slip straight into the first team. Probably Wanyama.

  1. The De Jong situation, from his mouth, proves we are willing to do what it takes to get the best... however as it turns out players have minds too and if they decide ‘actually, another good six months could see me sign for Barca‘ there’s little we can do other than throw even more money at it, which would be nuts.
  2. Wan Bissaka maybe doesn’t track back enough now, under AVB Rose didn’t at all.
  3. Walker-Peters clearly has both ability and awareness, and enough pace, with game time this will improve.
  4. We looked at Maddison, we wanted Grealish. If Villa fail to go up and we get Grealish it’ll have been a brilliant choice.
