Mauricio Pochettino has developed a reputation for bring young players through into the first team over the years at Espanyol, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur. At Spurs alone, the Argentine has handed 15 players from the academy their senior debut since he arrived at Tottenham in May 2014.

15 players looks a lot, and sounds like Poch really favours the youth, but in reality, most of them were handed debuts in friendly games and also the final 5 minutes of competitive matches. In reality, the only one out of the 15 who has really impressed and grasped a first team position since Poch took over has been Winks. KWP is struggling for game time, while Skipp is still largely unproven.

As for Kane, Bentaleb and Townsend who now are proven players, they were already introduced by the likes of Redknapp, AVB and Sherwood and were already doing relatively well. The were NOT "discovered" by Poch.

Poch may be good with the youngsters, but he really is overhyped when it comes to playing them and making a success out of them.

Punch me now.

I partly agree but Poch deserves credit for the way he trusts our youth when he starts playing them. Sure the likes of Marsh only got fleeting minutes but what impresses me is how often in a huge game he would bring on Winks or Skipp off the bench at vital times. Thats a huge vote of confidence in the boys. You would never see another top 6 side sub on a player like Skipp in the dying minutes like we did in the league cup 1st leg against Chelsea.

Same with last season when Winks was brought in to start at the Bernabeu. It's no wonder the players would run through walls for him.

Ditto Danny Rose, while not a young player, he’d been out for nearly a year with injury and depression, wasn’t coming on as sub against Real his first game back? Clearly Poch sees this kind of trust as important in building the character of young players and in creating a team ethic.

Interesting and better informed than many
due to Alistair Gold I assume.
One of the few external sites I ever click on.

The reason for promoting our own
is not jut to save money.
Our own give us a loyalty, commitment, and dedication
we don't get from most incomers
unless we get them young like Dele.
We also get 'trained up'
Pochettino ready
on field and off field.
See H. Winks esquire.
This bond encompasses players coaches and fans.
'lovin it'.

A lot of players are prem quality if they get time and Exp, There is a lot of talent at spurs it’s just getting them in to the first team which is hard. There are a lot of players with the talent it’s just stepping up, working hard enough and we have to expect an 18-20 old to become a man which is a big ask when you think what we all got up to when we were 16-21.

It seems that a lot of the more hyped players don't make it. I'm thinking Bentaleb, Pritchard, Onomah, Edwards.CCV etc. That's not to say that they won't get there eventually, but Winks never got a mention when all the talk was about Onomah. Poch obviously regards character as every bit as important as natural ability.

Yes without character, the determination to make something
of their abilities their talents won't be realised
at any level.
See Harry Kane definitely
Winks certainly
Skipp probably.

Some have the determination
but not the natural ability
some the ability but not the determination.
Make your own lists
but don't write anyone off
too early.

What do you folks think of Roles? Seen him a couple of seasons back playing Chelsea and thought he looked quality, thought he wouldve been on the fringes by now...?

If more than three of those listed make it to play regular for us I'll be amazed.

Most youth watchers can't understand why he is being overlooked. It doesn't appear he has ever trained with the 1st team and he hasn't been offered a new contract (which expires at the end of the season).

Previously, he has scored and assist a good amount but his all round game was lacking a bit, however he has worked on it and improved pretty much all of his weaknesses massively, whilst still scoring and assisting a good amount. Can't think what more the guy can do, he should be an option on the bench with our injuries, but at the very least he should be training with the first team and have his contract extended.
