Pochettino's greatest trick could be a revitalised Janssen for title run-in

The question was not even over before Mauricio Pochettino responded in decisive fashion. Vincent Janssen had scored for Tottenham’s Under-23s, a timely reminder of his presence at the club after Harry Kane had limped off against Manchester United that same day.

I haven't seen him since he last played for us but I always thought there was a good player in there somewhere. An extra 10% of experience or confidence could make the difference. I'd love to see it happen.

When he did play for us I think he overdid the physical confrontation with defenders instead of being a bit more clever with movement. As a result they always knew exactly where he was which is not what you want with a striker. I'd love him to turn it around but in all honesty I doubt he'll get much, if any opportunity to do it.

He actually scored a goal! I'd like to see him do 'a Sissoko', but I fear he's a dead duck, despite what Guus Hiddink and the Evening Standard say. From what we've seen of him he couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo.

I find this situation very interesting.

We have a player that on the one hand has struggled to compete at the level required and has been ostracised from the squad being loaned out to Turkey, played ok, but had injuries and on the other has never come out negatively against Poch or the club.

He's now been given a chance to be part of the squad. but i'd really like to know what happened for Janssen to be dropped and had the approach that Poch took to him. It cannot be that he just wasnt very good otherwise the same would have been said of GKN and Sissoko at various points but Janssen seems to have especially irked Poch but now has a way back in

There's a player there still and if he's fit...

I know people think he's shit but personally speaking, I think he can do a better job than Llorente

If Pochettino can turn Sissoko into a fan favourite...all I'm saying

Time for Poch to work his magic one again. He loves nothing more than an impossible challenge

I think if he'd of made contact with the ball with the half chance he had in his first game against Everton to win the game his career would have been different with us.

Also I maintain it was a bit of a silly signing. The player had no youth training at a top club, no top level experience and hadn't been a professional long. Less time that Dele for instance and yet was meant to be the back up to pretty much the best striker in world football. It was always a big ask and we were wrong to spend so much on him.

I'd love him to come good.

I agree with this. It certainly seemed as if his sole objective was to foul opponents instead of concentrating on his job.

He's only part of the squad because we've got space, and we aren't going to be able to sell him if he's ostracized even when there are squad places free. I will be amazed if he even gets onto the bench again.

Him wanting to leave clearly put him in a position where "he was no longer in Pochettino's plans". However, it's crazy that anyone thought a young striker would just hit the ground running in the Premier League, when many players who turn out to be very good do not.

And with a striker, confidence is such an important characteristic when it comes to instinct and not overthinking things. He had a bad first season in terms of goal return but it wasn't as bad as Soldado's (IMO). But Janssen failed to shin on loan and injuries may have counted against him.

Sometimes though, you just need a bit of luck.

Really? I'd be surprised if Sterling consistently gets ahead of him on the bench, but with Kane's expected return in a few weeks, you're right that Llorente and Son will be in front of him in the pecking order, so it may be a case of "now or never" for Vinny. Particular with the games coming thick & fast.

I honestly think Poch would give Sterling a try before VJ.

What a strange article. It makes it seem like we have very little options up front after Kane. But son and Llorente are clearly able to cover his absence. Llorente hasn't been great but he has done pretty well considering he is third choice, and I think he would be much harder to displace than what the author makes out.

We are not that short on attacking options at the moment. Maybe a player at most. Dele and Kane are big losses but we still have good options for now.
