That is a good point. You could argue that we're not a charity so there is no moral obligation on his part but if he has known for some time that his heart was set on a move then it would have been nice if it was made clear. Perhaps the lack of transfer activity in the last window did it for him. Maybe he was open to a new contract before and that he's not now convinced that his ambitions will be met at the club.

He said back in 2014 that he always had a plan to join one of the big two.... also read that he actually signed a new deal same time as Kane & Dele but then exercised the cooling period option

But that's a debate for another thread.....

Maybe he wanted a buyout clause and couldn't agree it with the club. I say Eriksen but I assume his agent has been dealing with all the negotiations.

very possibly we all know levy is not the easiest when it comes to negotiations at times!

Absolutely and that is great up to a point. Whether he always makes the right decisions is probably open to interpretation but he's only human. I believe that he always feels that he is making the decision in the best interest of the club even if that's not always how it appears. I get frustrated a bit because it seems like it's always either a case of people berating him or immediately leaping to his defence like they need to protect him.

Dont blame the guy but he could show us some respect by signing a new deal so we get a true value for him and then have a suitable agreement in place that if a certain came in and bid in at a certain price, would work best for both parties

Sounds ideal but I can't imagine it happening. Eriksen won't want to price himself out of his 'dream' move and I'm not sure how it would feel turning up for your first day in a new job knowing you'd just cost your new employer an absolute fortune when you didn't need to.

Agree but then thats when it comes down to the negotiations of getting a value right for both clubs.... how much honestly do you think his current value is compared to what it will be in the summer?

I hope we can at least persuade him to sign a new contract with a release clause specifically for Madrid/Barca for the next 2 seasons.

I know his advisors will say that isn’t in his best interests but if Your’ve been at a club that had helped further develop you, openly wants to keep you and the fans love you, surely you would feel some moral obligation to at least get them a half decent fee, even if it isn’t “market value”.

He’s latest quotes (IMO) suggest they are waiting for a formal offer from Madrid soon if not he’ll sign.

"I think people know what i want to do, and I know what they (Tottenham) would like, and there is a good dialogue."

I know people keep saying we can't replace him and what not. I agree with that but I wouldn't mind seeing us sign Werner and Kane playing behind and Werner can also play outside so he's pretty interchangeable. I just feel like Kanes passing is the best chance we have of coping with losing Eriksen.

Unless of course he intends to sign a new deal with us but is just stringing us along until we offer him a bigger wage than we’ve currently negotiated (I don’t know what that is and I expect it’s a lot higher than what he’s currently on). His agents got form for this.

Someone earlier on in the thread has posted quotes from an interview with him i think was after last nights game have a read of those .... they may well be playing us which i would take all day long as do not want to see him go, however we have to think of the financial sense of the deal....

I think you forgot to add this important piece with yours:-

I’ve just seen these ones, I didn’t see them before my post above. I really don’t think him leaving is cut and dried.

To be honest, I would never trust Levy with such agreements. I think Eriksen has been fair.

I took my quote from someone who translated the article a few pages back. I now see that part tagged on at the end in the Standard article just posted above.

Christian Eriksen has given Spurs wonderful service for 6 years and during that time has always shown himself to be a model professional, personally don't begrudge him a move to Spain if that's what he wants. Will be a difficult hole to fill that's for sure!

I hope we can work out a new contract with him. Would rather resign Eriksen than have to find a ready made replacement.

Definitely think dropping the best striker in the world back to attacking midfield would be a good move

The club isn't above criticism but in this case, I'm sure that they've offered decent terms - unfortunately the one thing we cannot guarantee is trophies and any player with ambition would want to see some silverware at the end of their career. Not to say he wouldn't win any at Spurs but when your Real Madrids and Barcelonas come into the picture, any player is bound to be keen because their chance of winning a champions league medal or title medal is suddenly increased massively. Taking my Spurs specs off, I don't blame the guy.

Do you think they offered decent terms? I mean Eriksen started off at a low base and reportedly on around 70k a week so i suspect perhaps 140k (best case at double but id think perhaps 100k)? which to you and I is a whole heap but think he can get a bit more elsewhere

Also there is the case that players are unable to resist RM and Barca. I wouldnt be so annoyed if he went to Barca but hugely annoyed if he went to RM. Hopefully if RM get Mourinho they focus on defence and attack and forget the midfield given the financial constraints they may have but in that case who do we sell to eh with one year remaining.

It feels like with Eriksen it's not about the money. Had it been he probably wouldn't have come to us from Ajax. He seems like a clever guy regarding the best moves to further his playing career and not merely filling his bank accounts.
