I'm always for giving the attacker the benefit of the doubt ... even it's against my team. There is no point in measuring if the fingertips were a inch before the toe of the defender. I mean even with camera and technology it is not clear - so why on earth should the attacker be punished, the offside rule prevents that the attacker has an unfair advantage and that is surely not the case if it's by such fine margins...

Why should the benefit of the doubt go to the striker? He was originally called offside so if there was any doubt the original decision should have stood. I think he was onside fwiw.

A lot on here would be saying the same if the roles were reversed too.

FFS, I mean if its so hard to tell the benefit should go with the attacker.

Obviously offside is offside but there are times where you could look at it for several minutes and still be undecided. In that case the benefit should go with the attacker.

Is that really that difficult to understand?

What's next, looking at the strands of their hair ?

The second half was much like the Wolves match, we were very lucky to get away with the win. We need bodies in for midfield this window, and thankfully after the united match we have a week off which is much needed given the performance in the second half last night.
Whoever scores first in the return leg goes through for me.

Sarri saying the players were put off by the lino raising the flag - he didn’t raise it until the goalie fouled Kane anyway so that’s bullshit. It seemed like that at the game and the clips have pretty much confirmed it so I’m not sure why he/they keep going on about it.

Stuff I haven’t seen since I got in.....

Was Son’s foul early on a foul?

Was Lamela’s a foul when he was in on goal.

The ref seemed to give a hell of a lot to Chelsea today and let a few against us go unpunished but it’s difficult to tell at the game sometimes.

Sarri is just trying to put pressure on the ref for the next game. But if that person is anything like Oliver last night he wont of needed to do it.

I agree it’s hard to tell at the game but it seemed he gave them everything. The Son one was down the other end and I think the Lamela one could of gone either way but it just goes to show it depends who is officiating as another ref could well of given both incidents in our favour.

The flag went up so late though

Fuck me Sky are going overboard with the Chelsea laptop, not even commentating that the ball had already been played.

Repeating myself but Oliver was a complete shitshow last night, he was so one sided it was almost laughable. Also the commentary I had was so pro Chelsea, screaming Azard!!!!!! every time he took a shot and Leon Osman was just bad.

I think VAR has a bearing on that, where linesman might not flag because they really aren't sure and so can't give offside with VAR they flag knowing it will go to VAR.

Strange atmosphere at the game yesterday, you could almost feel the tension and nerves around the ground. Chelsea approached the game the way we had in recent meetings, closing us down, putting pressure on the ball, quick passing interchange, whilst we rode our luck like they used to with their narrow wins in the past. Given the circumstances a win is a win and gives us a slight advantage for the second leg, but we will need to be more 'at it' to see this through. COYS!

Agreed. I think the part of the rule about any part of the body that can score is such an odd one. You can score with your head and with an attacker sprinting forward it's likely that their head will be closer to goal than their feet, whereas a defender stepping up would have their feet closer to goal than their head. It brings the angles into play which seems like an unnecessary amount of faff.

If the rule was clarified to focus on feet only I think things get much clearer and VAR could be used more effectively. Perhaps it would add some extra advantage to attackers at set pieces - they can have their head be offside and then score from a header for example - but is that such a bad thing? The defenders have extra time to prepare at set pieces anyway, and more goals in games generally leads to more exciting play. You could even introduce tracking chips into socks/boots, or use an extended hawkeye system to track boots and take the guessing element out of it if you wanted... sounds crazy and "impure" but if tech is coming let's make it good.

Saying all that, you can definitely see why Chelsea and their fans feel a bit miffed - I'm sure we would be the same. Chelsea played better than us, Hazard was a class above anybody else imo and Hudson looked well worth them hanging on to. A lot of their possession was probably a symptom of basically playing 6 in midfield although that was also the reason so many of their efforts were from range.

If Chelsea’s video extract was recorded one tiny fraction of a second after the official one, (which certainly appears to be the case - look at where the ball is) he’s bound to be over the line. That doesn’t mean he’s offside though. The timing is everything, which Chelsea seem to be overlooking.

Why are all the media reporting it like Poch agrees with Sarri re the VAR offside? From my understanding, Poch saying he doesn’t like to win it this way was to do with the use of VAR full stop, not that VAR got it wrong. All the pundits I saw on sky later on, bar Joe Cole, said it was a definite onside and definite pen. Yet I see in various papers and quotes that make it look like Poch agrees that Kane was offside.

Also, do we think Chelsea would’ve shown that stupid fucking laptop if it had been Hazard instead of Kane. Smokey Smokerson kept on saying ‘it’s not important’ about 5 times in that post match interview and then proceeded to talk about it like a **** anyway. ‘It’s not important, it’s not important, but it was offside, but it’s not important, but his knee and head were offside, but it’s not important, but English refs are bad at this, but it’s not important’.

Wanker.

Did anyone hear the commentator say ‘Gazzaniga’ at any point? I noticed it early and every time he made a save the commentator would talk about who took the shot. Clean sheet for Gazza. Solid again, nice footwork under pressure too.

I said this during the game but the fuck up isnt with VAR, the fuck up is with the flag going up when it shouldnt have... i think its a lesson learnt on how VAR should be used.

I also think the graphics etc from VAR is just awful, reminds me of a game on the old school nintendo or sega mega drive - just awful graphics and lines etc. I mean we should really look at how NFL does their video replays etc because we could learn a thing or two...

The fuck up is with Chelsea's players not playing yo the whistle. The ref can overturn a linesman's decision at any time regardless of VAR or not.

I'm loving Sarri's salty tears.

If VAR is used, you stick to VAR's decision. You cant go using your own telly, or your mates telly, or your old VHS fucking pause button.

Idiot.

Linseman have been instructed to raise their flag if they believe that the attacker is offside, it's down to Chelsea to learn to play to the whistle.

VAR is fine, players just need to adapt to it and learn how to use it quickly.
