I do wonder about spurs fans sometimes, there always seems to be some pocket of the fan base who simply can't recognise a good footballer if they came up and lamped a football full in their face from 5 yards.
Wouldn't it be great if we could have a Transfer Window for fans. :sneaky:

That's not an indication of a good player. Hit me square in the face with a football from 40 yards and I might stick their name in the YouTube search bar.

Never going to happen unfrotunately, Winks doesn't have the physicality, or pace to be able to do what he does off the ball.

Fernandinho has an amazing range of passing too and executes the passes perfectly.

I was blown away by his performance last night, basically taking on 3 opposition players and coming out on top.

Fernandinho is also 11 years older and hundreds of games more experienced than Winks, and was playing in Ukraine at 22, where he would continue to play for another 6 years.

Interestingly enough too, Fernandinho actually got double figure goals in the league that season. I wonder if he was playing more advanced, or if it was that the Ukraine league was so bad and Shakhtar so dominant that he could get double figures in goals from defensive midfield.

That's a long way from performing very well in the PL and CL at 22, as Winks is doing.

Regardless of Winks playing another 500 games, he's never going to be the type of midfielder Fernandinho is, because Winks simply doesn't have the speed, aggression or dynamism. You'll be waiting a very long time for Winks to ever dominate a team like Liverpool the way Fernandinho did last night.

He was absolutely immense. The whole City midfield was amazing though. What I'd give to have such artists in midfield like that. Never going to happen with Winks and Sissoko in there unfortunately, that ability to keep the ball in such intense surroundings.

And apparently Bernardo Silva ran 8.5 miles in the match....more than any other player in the EPL this year.

They used to do the same with JJ
No good because he wasn't Gerrard.

I give up on supporting Winks for the moment.
Let's wait and see.
Sorry Winksy I did my best.
You aren't as good
as some of the best in the world
who are several year's older
with a different skill set
and role.
and never will be apparently.

My lines get longer and longer the angrier bemused or more depressed I get. See what I mean.

Wow, just wow.

You obviously don't watch Jorginho play and I'm amazed 4 people agreed with that post. Jorginho is a miles better deep lying play maker than Winks. It isn't even close. Jorginho is always looking forward with his passes, he completely dictates the play and is at the centre of everything Chelsea do.

Winks does nothing of the sort.

This has absolutely confirmed what I suspected. Winks is so vastly overrated by some on here. The comparison to Jorginho is ridiculous.

You lost me here, too.
Jorginho is fucking awful. The hype around him baffles me. I thought it had died out, too.

Winksy is class. Very happy he gets a break tonight.

It is everything to do with Winks, because when I watch him play, I don't see a player who is doing enough in a Spurs shirt to keep his place unfortunately. He leaves us a bit short in that position.

I agree with you, a good young player who hopefully will continue to improve, and one day he may be good enough to be a regular and even makes the position his own, but I'm not seeing enough from him in that role.

With Sissoko, with his limitations in mind, having a stand out season and generally hugely impacting our game play from both an offensive and defensive perspective, it only leaves Winks as the player who is clearly upgradable.

Winks is a rotation option but asking to be a first choice there for us is still beyond him. He should learn the game from the bench, and come in when injuries and suspensions hit. I firmly believe this is what Poch thinks as well, hence why we will (hopefully) spend a large transfer fee on signing a CM either now or in the summer.

What I think you fail to realize is that it is because of Winks simple but effective game, that allows Sissoko to make his runs and cover for the full backs because Winks is always there providing another option that our opponents have to account for. Too many people judge players just for their passes, goals and tackles without looking at what they do off the ball. Winks has by far the best understanding of any of our CMs (I consider Eriksen a AM) of where he needs to be to be able to receive the ball while also creating space for others. There are also a handful of times each game where he receives the ball in tight spaces, plays a 1-2 with someone and then breaks open to switch the field. That pass may only be 20 to 30 yards and many times on the ground but he has put us two on one on the opposite wing. Winks game is still developing but he already does something extremely important in that by playing his game he makes other players around him better.

We need another CM but one that may give us something slightly different in matches. One that can play with Winks or be a different option for certain matches, not a replacement for Winks.

Playing the devils advocate:

From that video it is obvious that the editor for once chose a piece of music that compliments the edit and doesn't bother this viewer.

On the footballing side I only counted 3 clips where he had a one-touch pass though in one of them he had 2 in a row - that was not a defensive action - which is not alot for a YouTube highlight reel. Just following the 4 count while watching, it was mostly 1-2s always to his right foot, I don't recall seeing him using the left once...? so 2-3-4-5 touches or a run to his right foot would be my scouting report.

After Sissokkos newfound self, the forward runs don't look scary at all.

But I am not a scout or the Devils advocate and think he will only grow and learn exponentially with gametime - as well as from watching CE on the trainingpitch regarding forward distribution. He's got all the tools except a left foot in my book.
I thought Arthur was amazing against us for Barca at Wembley, winks wasn't far off of that level against Madrid. Arthur is very special indeed in that deep lying role and I think playing in that team winks could slot in for him. He is a very very good player. If he played for another prem team at that level we would be absolutely raving about him.

Great thing is that he will only get better.

It was astonishing to see! He just ran and ran. It wasn't jogging either, he was closing down like a man possessed. That is what it takes at the top. Not just special ability, but the sheer drive and determination to leave everything on the pitch.

I was very impressed.

Completely agree. There is a reason that the wjnks/Sissoko partnership is our best despite them not being our best individuals. They have great balance. Our transitions have become so much quicker with them in the team.

Winks does a lot of simple but essential things. He links play, gets and gives it simple. He runs with it, finds space. It's easy to overlook the importance of the basics.

He does them extremely well.
