Poch wants talented starters, not stocking fillers aka mercenaries. The recent ITK suggests his targets turned us down. Hence my reaction of concern. Poch wants us to push on in the market. Without the financial support, we'll struggle to attract the top quality that we need.
I don't really see the need for dramatic concern, one player turned us down because he will get much higher wages elsewhere and the other because he wants to and can go to a club like Barcelona. There are still plenty of players who can improve our squad, if we can't locate any then that's a real concern and the scouting department should be sacked.

So I assume from this that we are looking for another diminutive flexible forward and a elite centre midfielder.

Great news.

I guess it's such a difficult balance of attempting to challenge for these elite players that you also appear to be wasting your time.

I'm very much of the opinion that our scouting isn't quite good enough. Dont get me wrong, we've had some amazing finds with the likes of Toby, Son and Dele but if we are going to challenge at the top we need to continue with this and any elite signing that falls into our lap is a bonus.

There's players in between Pulisic and Nkoudou if you know what I mean.

I wonder what's changed so much in the last year. ITK was fairly adament before that only the Manc clubs were above us in the pecking order.

It also comes down to what we are prepared to pay in comparison to our rivals. In the case of Pulisic, Chelsea are in dire need of strengthening in attacking positions with Hazard seemingly off and Willian et al over 30. Therefore they would be prepared to pay more to secure targets.

That is why I said “There is variables and challenges ahead”. Why I shared how the agent world has become in essence what it is. And again why I said the challenge to join the big 4 is going to basically challenge our principles if we want to acquire our chosen players. And again made mention that ‘our preferred targets, we are not their preferred choices’.

Thanks for the info as always. At what point do we change our principles I wonder. Surely we have to adapt

So in summary

Then Genk player is not coming in Jan
The Ajax player turn us down
The soon to be Chelsea player turn us down
The PSG player is holding out for Barca
Poch never heard of the Hull player before

So we are left with the possible Championship loan backs that Herc mentioned in his ITK earlier.

Did I get the ITK summary right?

Yes, but are they going to be of good enough quality to compete with Son, Moura, Dele, and Lamela?

Probably not. I think the point is that the players that can improve our team are of a high enough quality that we will be competing with the elite clubs to sign them. Poch has spoken about this in interviews a few times now, and was highlighted again in the post match with Harry the other night.

De Jong for example would be a great signing, but he obviously wants to go to Barca or a club of that ilk. If we were competing with Arsenal and Everton for his signature, we’d stand more of a chance, but we aren’t.

I do agree with JJ's statement in that Pulisic probably wasn't worth the investment, and its good to know De Jong would have been deemed so.

The problem is will any sure thing at over £100m on fees and wages ever going to have us as our best option? Surely at some point we have to do something?

Looking at Ndombele, from what JJ said in the past it suggests we are not sure at the price involved, but in this case it might have to be one to go for. For me CM is our big weakness, and is the area where I feel we can be exploited in big games

Full back and backup attacker feel more like a summer job.

I can see why Poch would want to keep faith, doing so has got us a brilliant points total so far, but if Dembele goes we'll feel light in there. The only difference between us and Pool IMHO is they look more solid than us, and it comes back to CM.

I can understand letting players go this window without replacement to certain extent. Permanent deals for our loanees or N'Koudou and Janssen for sure. Even Dembele as he has earned his paycheck, but If he goes then we need to have some belief that Wanyama is available on spring or get someone in now. As for Llorente, either some replacement or fit Janssen to stay for spring.

Maybe not, but De Jong would certainly have competed with Winks, Sissoko et al, and he can't be the only player of that quality/profile out there. They can't all go to Barcelona (though obviously quite a few of them could go to Chelski, on past form), we just need to have a longer list. The fact that we actually approached De Jong is a positive, to my mind.

The 'package' isn't the problem per se.

It's the uncertainty about the end of a contract.

We have a £100m+ forward and a £50m+ defender who could leave for nothing.

With every purchase you probably have to assume that there is no selling value. Basing your finances on the assumption of player sales is a road to financial disaster.

I get the impression that a massive financial deal fell through; perhaps the naming rights in September?

I know that the Daily Star reckoned we were in negotiations with HSBC, but I couldn't find another source backing this up...and it is the Daily Star lol

Anyway, whatever the issue, the financial muscle that Hercules predicted hasn't come to pass so I think something changed.

There was some ITK that said that one of the bigwigs at HSBC (possibly even the CEO) was the same guy who we originally did the AIA deal and he and Levy had reached an agreement. He then went to get it signed off by their board and they declined.

i think the itks have been emphasizing that the money was there but our targets rejected us
