Oh, and losing your top goal scorer mid-season didn't help either

PS What was that guy's name? He was an A-1 idiot

Yeah, it was a scripted documentary made into a major motion picture

Scripted documentary?

They’re fans don’t come off well do they. Makes me think about us.

Really? How so? Admittedly I haven't watch all of it yet, but so far they just seem like they're desperate and hopeless that the club they love is being thrown down the toilet by a bunch of fuckwits. If anything I'd say the fans are the only ones who come out of the documentary with any credit so far from what I've seen.

But that's a debate for another thread.....

I was just mucking about as a reaction to the Sean Bean film reference. Years ago (nearly 30 I think) there was a TV documentary series on BBC 2 called, I think, 'United we Stand' about Sheffield United's promotion winning season under Dave Bassett. Looking back now on the segments on YouTube, it's incredible how much football has changed in the intervening years. The directors then were all 'local boys made good' and whilst wealthy, nowhere near the wealth of today's owners.

Actually just finished this series about an hour ago and thought it was brilliant.

Going into it you know the outcome as it's documenting the 17/18 season, so that lessened the tension a little from the over-aching story of them trying to scrape by and stay up. I found myself enthralled by the regular, everyday stuff on show such as lunch service and office work, for some reason it really made me take a step back and think about how enormous our staff contingent must be and how reliant they all are on the seemingly haphazard successes of a sport where you can implode at any moment.

It also showed some behind-the-curtain stuff on transfer dealings and just how up in the air they all are. One minute they're signing a striker, the next he's asked to speak with his family about it, and then the next he's joined a rival club instead. Again, it really brought home how difficult some of this stuff is. All of us want transfer dealings done the first couple of weeks of a window, but as the documentary really shows it all comes down to the last twenty-four hours for a lot of clubs. It really isn't the slick, well-oiled machine we (I, at least,) perceive it to be. It's chaotic and rarely has a predictable outcome, as we've all experienced ourselves in the past.

I don't want to go into much more than that other than to repeat that I thought it was brilliant and absolutely worth a watch.

Thought the standard of management was pretty poor tbh, even Coleman who everyone was raving about his 'achievements'

It was obvious that the players were still shell-shocked from their PL relegation and they retained a paper-thin confidence all the way to the end of the season

Yet this wasn't addressed by either manager

Thought they'd be more psychological assessment and planning for every single player, to make sure that they were full of confidence and believing that they were world-beaters

I think this is 80% of pro-sports at the top levels. These players obviously have the raw talent to get to the top, but it's the mental resilience under pressure that separates the good from the excellent

Wasn’t really impressed by guardiola either in that Man City documentary. It was all a bit to camp and hammy. Watching some of those school of hard knocks and all or nothing nfl docs they really are in another league with preparation and man management/motivation.

3rd thought. I hope the seats in our new stadium are made of material that is resistant to colour-bleaching from sunlight. Those formerly-red-but-now-pink seats in the stands at the Stadium Of Light are a really bad look.

lol when the fans assault the cameraman after going 3-0 down against Bristol City. Also the fan calling Chris Coleman "a prick" straight to his face. That blonde bird working as the player liaison was a bit of alright though.

I thought that was one of the delays, we had used cheaper ones (ie the ones that fade) and the ones that we had put in had to be ripped out and started again.

I may be misremembering though

Just finished it tonight and lapped it up, real warts and all , the fans are so die hard and I finished up really hoping they'd escape relegation even though I knew the outcome lol.
They are making another series for this current season , should be another decent watch.

I would do the same in his position. The **** is the person who gave him that deal

Surely professional pride also has to come into it though. Surely you would want the opportunity to go elsewhere and attempt to rebuild your career.
Fortunately they got shot of him in the summer anyway.

I'm a little bit more confused by what Ellis Short actually wants from the club. I get that's he was more reluctant to spend following relegation, but to stop putting money in completely!?!?
I see he sold the club in summer as well.

Just finished it. Binged it since last night.

Thought Coleman game across well as a person but why on earth did he not manage their star striker better? I know maybe Grabben’s attitude sucked a bit but jeez, he started hooking him and Pissing the player off and as a result they lose their goalscorer and weren’t able to replace him which directly contributes to them going down. In fact I’d say it was probably the biggest factor. You just can’t lose a striker like that and as other players alluded to, Coleman surely should have managed Grabben better.

You get the impression Coleman didn’t like him and thought it would be easier to replace the striker, but in the end they ended up with a kid in Fletcher who couldn’t score in a brothel.

I think that was a major fuck up by Coleman. Should have kept Grabben happy till the summer and then made the change.

Would love to Chuck one up that player liaison woman too!
