It saddens me how many of our supporters can’t enjoy his continuous progression and development of this young player for no reason other than an inability to understand that at 22 he’s not the finished article.

Fabinho is 25, Winks is 22 and their not even alike in playing style anyway.

Bizarre comparison.

I’m talking about a CM who is able to knit play together, keep possession ticking over and impact the game from a defensive and attacking stand point.

Don’t we all agree that CM is by far our weakest area? And Winks is a CM right? I’m genuinely surprised if people don’t think we need better in that position. I’m not writing the kid off, just think we need better in there.

I thought last night Winks didn’t impact the game much at all positively. Got hounded out of possession a few times. He did some things well, got stuck in, as I say, Scott Parker.

You literally ignored the argument against your point.

He's 22. We don't know yet how good a player he'll develop into. I don't think I've seen a single person say they don't want to improve our options in CM. That's very different from saying Winks isn't good enough.

Fabinho took 6 months to play 1 game against a midfield which was shit. Winks bossed Modric and Kroos at Wembley and the Bernabeu. Have some perspective.

Wasn't his best tonight, is probably his worst in a spurs first team shirt in terms of passing, availability, presence and tempo control, however whilst I was thinking that whilst watching live, he harried and won possession a couple times very nicely. I think he is showing signs of tiredness especially when consideri g it was mentioned we need to control his game time from the injury recovery. He's been a trojan mentally playing far more games than poch would if probably liked. He never let's us down even when not his best, like last night.

Couldn’t watch the match live last night as was working but followed on the match thread, it sounded like he was having a mare. However, I watched the game when I got home and actually thought he played pretty well. It is amazing how differently you watch a game when you know the result and aren’t stressed, can judge a player so much more objectively.

This.

He’ll improve over next couple of seasons as he becomes more integrated in the team.

Some people have crazy expectations of him already.

I just wish he'd impose himself more on games. He seems to play so within himself.

I still don't see him as good enough to be first choice CM for us, it has to be said. We need better in there. I look at how Fabinho is starting to play at Liverpool, absolute leagues above Winks. What he showed against United ability wise was a really high level and he only cost 30 million.

I still just see a less dynamic / aggressive Scott Parker.
He cost like £43 million.

Harry Winks is clearly a talented player. He’s stood up in big games, against big opposition and performed very well. He doesn’t perform to that standard consistently though, that could well be due to his relatively young age or it could be due to the fact he doesn’t have it in his locker. The only way of finding that out is time. Time in training and time on the pitch.

For me the question is; given our position and aspirations as a club, should we be granting Harry that time, or should we be looking to invest in the market. The Spurs way would be to grant him time, and I’m inclined to agree, however for me, the counter argument is that right now, today, we need more.

For comparison, Phil Foden is 18 and every time I see him for City I’m hugely, hugely impressed. If we genuinly want to compete for titles with the likes of city, that’s the kind of CM talent we need.

Of course, it’s highly likely that due to our financial position, we may not be able to invest in the market. In that case, we best hope Harry kicks on finds it in him to shine every week.

I thought he did really well last night. The Arsenal midfield didn't control the game like you'd expect them to at home and that was largely down to Winks and Sissoko running their plums off for us.

Hes just not good enough if we want to move forward. This is the one area we Must strengthen. Trouble is it will cost us £70m for a decent ball. Playing CM

Where in my post did I say he wasn’t good enough? Case in point you can’t assess a player on here without too much hyperbole the other way, in defence of a player.

It was football writers player of the year, so voted by Journos, not the PFA which is voted by the players. Bale won it that year I think!

How long will he dine out on that?

Don't know. But I suppose it could be seen as a masterful display from one so young against that calibre of opponent, dare I suggest a platform to work from.

In addition, worth remembering that he had a lengthy lay off as a result of ankle ligament injury and has only really just been getting back these past couple of months.
