Vertonghen and Dier were worse than Foyth yesterday. Imo they were more culpable for the 3rd goal than foyth. He made a mistake 50 yards from goal. Have absolutely no idea what Dier and vertoghen we’re doing they gave Lacazette all the space and time he wanted. Vertonghen obviously to blame for the first and Dier totally sold himself on the 4th. I’d suggest if davinson sanchez was playing yesterday we’d at least have drawn. Slowly realising he is our best defender.

Our best defender is Toby.

Foyth gave the ball away...it was his fault

Foyth has huge potential and is a very good 4th choice centre back, but should not be getting picked ahead of Toby, especially in huge games like yesterday. Poch gambled and it backfired, similar to Inter away.

they targeted him all game as a weak spot. It was clearly team strategy. Emery couldn't believe his luck when he saw the team sheet. In the first half you had Ewobi taking the ball into the box towards Foyth, specifically, whilst doing some strange sort of tribal foot dance in the hope he would stick a leg out and concede a pen. This happened more than once and its obviously something they talked about before the game.

Looked nervous as hell, which was innevitable, and they didn't give him any time with the ball. This was a contributing factor not only to the goal but not being able to play out from the back in general. Pooch leaving aldervereld on the bench is one of his biggest acts of sabotage to date, and, let's face hit, he's had alot of these moments.

Oh come on, Sanchez is very good and has all the attributes, but Vertonghen has been fantastic for the last season and a half. He's just come back from injury and had a shocker yesterday but he's a world class centre back.

Actually, Dier had to cover DM, CB and RB yesterday. Foyth and Aurier were terrible. They were targeted and it all came to a head. From poor give aways, to costly mistakes, to losing their man. They are equally at fault. Cant solely blame Aurier when they were making Foyth look pub league as well.

How people say he was fine is beyond me. He was entirely out of his depth. Looked like he no business being out there. He has alot of potential but he should not be starting these games. He’s not ready yet at all for this level. A PL loan to a lower table side would work well for him, IMO. A top 4, high level race is not his level yet. He’ll get there but this is way too much, way too fast.

All the worrying signs of mistakes compounded to come up all at once yesterday. Rash decisions, losing the man, give aways, being out of position. He was not good yesterday and the 1 change that was obvious to make the entire game was Toby for him.
It's bizarre how this forum decides some players are ok to talk shit on and others are not.

Foyth is a great prospect but is one who should not be thrown into a game like that when you have Toby sat on the bench. An experienced head yesterday might have worked better for us. I do miss Davinson as well though, he hasn't had a great season but I feel his pace would have been a positive yesterday, Auba and Lacazette in the second half destroyed us on the break.

But we move on, I don't think playing any different partnership would've changed the result that much as the whole team disappeared in the second half but I think Toby and Jan should be first choice partnership when both fit and then Davinson in for games where the opposition have a lot of pace.

I get what you're saying but the most experienced one in the squad threw his arm up in the box to give away a penalty inside 10 minutes, got sent off and is now banned for 1 match during the busiest period of the season. Vertonghen has evaded a lot of criticism with most of it being on the kid more than 10 years his junior, seems a bit unbalanced.

*I'm not excusing him by any means as he did make mistakes but if Foyth did what Vertonghen did I would not be surprised if he was slaughtered. First NLD at 20 against a team that played well and got the tactics right, very difficult and frustrating result but he will learn from it and improve. Pick yourself up and grind out the next month's results.

Don’t like how he is getting hung out to dry by lots of fans and pundits due to his inexperience when the more experienced heads around him were no more convincing

We want Poch to give youth their chance but we moan when these youngsters don’t come in and perform flawlessly straight away

I could understand him being singled out if we lost directly due to his error in an otherwise great team and tactical performance, but this was far from the case

Poch threw him into the deep end and unfortunately it didn't work out. The manager now has a dilemma about what to do with him - on one hand you think he needs to get back out on the pitch asap to get over the error and rebuild his confidence but on the other he might be better off on the sidelines for a few games and get his head cleared. It's never nice for a young player to be made a scapegoat. While I don't think any fan is intentionally going after him (it's more annoyance that Toby didn't play) he is the fall guy out of this.

True but stones was making those mistakes at eveton. When he cut them out city got him. Let's hope that doesn't happen to us

Way to rewrite history there mate. He was getting lambasted from all quarters in his first season at city. In fact it was only Pep that stubbornly kept playing that offered him any praise whatsoever.

Just watched the whole game again up to 75 minutes. Yes he was a bit shaky first 20 minutes but nothing major few misplaced passes. Up to the mistake he was fine. In fact his clearance from under the bar even though a goal given was unreal.

I think there were mistakes he made when he did the initial work well. Two that come to mind was when he beat an Arsenal player to the ball in the right full back area but then tried a forward ground pass through the middle (to Sissoko?) which got cut out easily early in the game. Should have played safe to Hugo or just cleared it.

The second was actually a lovely interception followed by a great dart past one player. If he passed it then that would be gif worthy but he tried to get past another player and just ran into him.

Both things he'll get better with age and he has the right attributes and courage to try these things which is good....but I'd rather he be learning his trade to begin with against the lesser sides where the opponents are less likely to have the quality to punish. Or a game at Wembley / home where we have the large majority of the crowd support backing him, unlike a big away game where the home crowd - for once - made some noise. Players bounce off great home support but they can also flounder under the heat and I think everyone associated with Arsenal wanted to make him crack.

I dont think anyone is blaming Foyth and hanging him out to dry. In fact the opposite. We cannot fault him for being inexperienced or for his young age, but he should never have started this game. In fact no one would have had any issues with him starting against Southampton but yesterdays game was too big for him and Poch shouldnt have played him - there is a time and place.

He isnt to blame but the fact he started, Emery would have told every single one of his players including attackers to push from the get go and attack the crap out of us. It basically put them on the front foot from the get go. Thats just my view.

I understand and they are valid points, but I’ve seen people saying they don’t want to see Foyth playing for us again, and essentially blaming our collapse on him playing instead of Toby when there were far more significant contributing factors. This sort of hyperbolic reaction really grinds my gears

Ive not see those posts but yeah theyre uncalled for, if a player plays and theyre shit, the manager is at fault for playing them. Poch is at fault in this case, he appears to have faith which is fine but it was an incorrectly calculated decision by him by playing him in yesterdays game.

My view is the other factors occurred because the decision put us on the back foot and gave Arsenal that extra bit to put us under immense pressure fro the start. It is difficult to recover from that - just look at what we did against Chelsea.

To see where Foyth was last season to where he is 12 months later is quite remarkable

Tough away games at Palace, Wovles and Scum and a 'home' game v Chelsea

20 years old, from abroad!

Yes he’s made a few mistakes but quite frankly I think he’s been fantastic playing in an extremely demanding position where you can be heavily exposed

This lad looks the real deal to me. Once he cuts out the clumsy challenges in his own box and stops playing himself into trouble he could really be something

Him and Sanchez wow

Don’t know about Toby’s situation but I presume he’ll be gone soon but atm we have by far and away the best quartet of Central Defender in the league and 1 is a kid and the other a baby!!

Spot on. If Poch can see plenty of talent in this very young lad, which many of us can also see, then you can’t beat this kind of game time and experience. Personally, I think it’s great management. Pat him on the back, let him learn and help ensure we nurture another star for the team. Some are so short-sighted.

You say nobody is blaming him or hanging him out to dry but then say that the game was 'too big' for him. The plain fact is that Vertonghen was way worse than Foyth with the penalty, tackles, interceptions, forward passes and then a red card and yet nobody seems to think the game was 'too big' for him. Same with Dier who dozed off at times. It's also obvious to everyone that Toby would have played a blinder even though Foyth was actually better than him when they played together. I think it was a brave move from Poch which backfired but I really hope he sticks with Foyth whenever he can.

Not sure how the game was too big for him seeing as he played in the Chelsea match, clearly he's ready.

Fingers need to be pointed at his defensive partner as he's the one that had the meltdown which is so unlike him, totally lost his head the moment he handballed and never recovered.
