He didn't say that, he said everyone had to prove themselves. VDV took the hump.He left because AVB made it clear that he wouldn't get in the team.

TBf We did get him towards the end of his prime. He was fantastic for us. Just wish we got a few more years out of him thats all. We probably should of.Up there as one of my favourite players we signed, it wasn't just what he did on the pitch I think he moved us up (forgive me because I hate this phrase) "another level" in terms of mentality I don't just mean the other players but the fans as well, it was like another step on from when we signed Edgar Davids, there was a belief change around the place.
The day I sit down and do my "All time favourite Spurs XI" vs my "Spurs players I wish we'd have gotten in their prime XI" it'll be one game of football I wish I could watch.
Cheers Rafa come back and say hello!

Michael Dawson was told the same, stayed, buckled down and eventually ended up being in the team. VdV fudged off as soon as he could, and has rarely let an opportunity to whine about how unfairly he was treated by AVB. Don't really care for the bloke, it's not AVBs fault that he had so little faith in his own ability.
According to VdV this is not exactly true according to VdV:
'He bought Gylfi Sigurdsson and then told me he would be his new No.10'.
and
"It was private things, but also when what's his name [Andre Villas-Boas] came he said to me 'you're not my number one' and I had played two years, like, unbelievable
He left for his wife as well. She was basically living in Germany at the time and VdV wanted to save his marriage, but if a manager came in that gave VdV support he would of stayed.
AVB was awful at talking to players, or communicating in general, ask Gallas and half the Chelsea squad. I think that, above all else, was his major weakness as a manager.
How have we got this far in and no-one posted my favorite VDV tribute video??
