I was surprised but it's a friendly for the Wayne Rooney Foundation.

Bizarre bit of indulgence. I don't think anyone cared that he retired, I don't think anyone has missed him, I don't think there was any clamour from fans to recognise him.

Bit of a farce really, hopefully it doesn't start a trend.

Good for him - don't understand all the fuss. Its a friendly against a team with no manager. This is not life or death.

Hopefully he starts, and gives Harry the match off....

It’s a marketing wheeze by the FA - sell some tickets.

Pretty much.

He set some records but if were being brutally honest, his England career peaked in 2004 and went downhill from that point on.
For me he never fulfilled the promise he showed which says a lot considering he had a great career. Watching him in 2004, he looked better than Ronaldo at the time.

Tbf how many players will break outfield caps and goalscoring records?

Really he picked them up by luck, that he had such a freak early breakthrough as a teenager in a time when more international games are played and so was around long enough (even when he was clearly past it for two/three years and managers kept picking him) to play enough qualifying campaigns against minnow teams and pad out his record. His international career peaked at 18, and his tournament record, particularly World Cup, is atrocious.

And I think a lot of football fans see it that way - He might have set a benchmark in the record books, but in my opinion I doubt he goes down as a legend of English football. When he retired the consensus seemed to be 'at fucking last', and not of someone who deserved a great send off.

I guess if it's just luck his records will get broken pretty quickly then.

Why has this upset some people?
Because I think that some people feel that it trivialises the meaning of an international call up and it's just being done for commercial reasons (albeit in the name of charity). I can see it from both sides.

If it's for charity in a meaningless friendly then I don't see the reason for the outrage.

Because as I said, some people believe that an England cap should mean something. I think it's subjective - I get both opinions.

I think it’s quite nice personally, like a testimonial game. He’s England’s top scorer, he deserves a send off. I can see why some would be critical of the decision though.

The other thing that was pointed out is that Rooney is between a rock and a hard place because even if he didn't think it was appropriate, it looks churlish on his part to turn it down.

On a separate but related note, I hope that Callum Wilson gets a chance.

From a charitable point of view I fully understand the reason why this match is happening but I also sympathise with the people who believe such a game is somehow trivialising a player receiving the honour of international recognition.

What if Gary Lineker had played in a similar charity game a couple of years after he was left out of the squad and managed to score a goal to equal Bobby Charlton's record or maybe even two and beat it ....would that have been fair to Bobby ?

I sincerely hope they raise millions for the cause but all aspects of doing this under the "international umbrella" should be seriously considered.

Apparently David Beckham turned down a tribute cap, saying he only ever wanted to be selected on merit. When Beckham is turning it down, you know it’s a little bit ‘too much’

For those who feel that this demeans the honour of international recognition, can I just say Carl Jenkinson, Fraizer Campbell, Matt Jarvis, Jay Bothroyd, Bobby Zamora, Zat Knight, Geoff Thomas, Carlton Palmer, Joey Barton, David Nugent, Michael Ricketts and Jon fucking Flanagan?

If anyone is guilty of trivialising an England call-up, it's not Wayne Rooney. It's the cockwombles and shitehawks appointed to run the England football team for the past 30 years.

Oh, and while I'm on the subject of Rooney...

It still pains me that the fat trollop scored the last ever goal at WHL :depressed:

I like to think of it as the last ever goal by a losing team at White Hart Lane.

The last ever goal by a winning team was, of course, scored by Harry Kane.
