Jack is playing for his childhood club and earning a good wage for doing so. Given the chance of a career move or staying where he is, it's not such a big deal.

I am interested to see how villa get around FFP though, and the penalties in the championship are truely punitive.

You need to have a certain mentality. Playing for your childhood club is one thing. Ask 16 year old Wayne Rooney.

Agreed. The kid has a lot to learn and I struggle to see how another year in the Championship does him genuine benefit. He'll be 24 by the time he potentially gets into the Premier League. Halfway through his career without having the opportunity to test himself in a completely different intensity. In the Championship teams drop deep against you when you lose the ball, in the Prem against the cream is where you learn genuine intelligence and Jack risks losing important years and a place in the England team because of what's been going on.

He really needs to be in the Premier League where he's better than a large % of the players currently making up the numbers. If he was 19 it would be different, he'll be 24 and will only have tested himself against the likes of Bristol City & Rotherham

I am disappointed we didn't get this across the line I can't pretend otherwise. i'd really like to believe we will go back for him some time.

I disagree. If Real Madrid genuinely wanted to sell they'd have out an option to buy in the loan as well which I believe isn't the case. We'll never know but I don't fancy Kovacic was a realistic target at the £££ being banded around

We'll never know - but it's been reported in previous windows and by ITK that Poch was very keen on Kovacic.

Would be strange if Poch then wasn't interested once the player was pushing to leave RM.

I imagine Kovacic was pushing for a move, and was eventually placated on the understanding Modric may move on next summer.

Modric also wanted to move on, so the whole situation was probably up in the air until a few days ago.

Pure guesswork obvs.

Never agreed with him before, but Merson’s summary of Tottenham’s transfer window with regards to Grealish was spot on.

Good player, but would find it hard to make the starting XI if everyone fit and is not a signing that would help us to win the league.

So not the end of the world really. It would have been the Kovacic, De Ligt, Martial, Zaha’s that we needed to really move forwards.

Playing for fourth imo this year with what we have.

Got to believe Kovacic, De Ligt and Martial/Zaha was our plan going into the summer with hope that we could snag Grealish as an upside/cheap deal. Big ol swing and a miss.

But then only one of those players actually moved anywhere! If they were that good and available then sopmeone would have bough them instead of the rancid pile of shite that got transferred.

You don't think any of those guys were that good? It seems pretty early on we realized De Ligt wasn't going to be an option. WC left Kovacic too late/whatever, Zaha too expensive, Martial not happening.. We really had no alternates? BS.

You got some statistical evidence to back that up?

Is he does sign a deal he needs to ensure the clause isn't something that hinders his chances next time around. It'll be interesting to see if he signs such a deal what his release clause would be. If he was concerned about being priced out of the market this next step for him and his agent will be a key one
It could become a sessengon.

No, what I'm saying is that there were very few players transferred during the window that would have made an impact at Spurs.

True but we've got to the stage now where the players that will improve us will cost top dollar. The attitude of Poch, which I agree with is, we either go for those players or we go for no one. The frustrating thing is Levy will always pick the latter option.

Or a 24 year old Harry Kane.

Harry Kane? He's on £200k per week, plays for a team in the Champions League, has just captained his nation to a World Cup semi final and has earned his status as one of the best in the World doing so.

Jack Grealish will be 24 pretty much by the first time he genuinely tests himself as an established player in the Premier League. The difference is chalk and cheese mate have a word

Ha, good post.
I just wonder is it really that crazy to have paid £80 mil for Martial seeing as we haven’t signed anyone else. We couldn’t sign two or three at that level but is an £80mil net spend (maybe less if we shift Vinny etc this week abroad) really that much for a team in the CL for the third year running or am Iiving in a dream world. He can cover two positions and MP has earned that backing.
Poch must be exhausted spending time with these players, showing them round and selling them the project for none of them to ever sign.
