In these days of saturated media coverage when player knowledge is such that arguments can rage over whether the passing accuracy percentage of the Under-15's reserve left winger accurately reflects his skill base or not, it's nice to sit back and seek to remember those players who have played for Spurs and yet passed under the radar so successfully that you'd be hard-pressed to pick them out in their own personal highlights reel.
I'm not after the bad players we all remember, or those who played a couple of times and then disappeared, or those who combined both attributes (yes, Ben Alnwick, I'm talking about you). I want those players whose name you vaguely recall, but who have left absolutely no other impact on you whatsoever. The ones who inspire conversations such as
Spurs fan 1: "Do you remember x?"
Spurs fan 2: "God, yeah, bloody hell"
Spurs fan 1: "What was he like again?"
Spurs fan 2: "Not a clue"
I'm going to kick off with four players I must have watched, but, for the life of me, just can't recall. What I want from you, then, is either a memory that means they did leave their mark (in which case my apologies to those below) or a player even more obscure than the ones I've picked out.
My four candidates then are:
Guy Butters. Defender. Started 34 games on the trot for us in 1988-89 apparently before going on loan toSouth Park Southend. Not ringing any bells whatsoever.
Ian Crook. Midfielder. 6 seasons in the 80s. 39 games. Genuinely unable to recall what he brought to the team apart from generally being somewhere in the middle of the park. He may have been ginger, but that might have been someone else.
Paul Moran. Forward. 36 games and 2 goals in the 80s and 90s. His Wikipedia entry says "Paul Moran (born 23 May 1968) is an English retired football forward". And that's it. Does anyone here know more than that because I don't.
Andy Gray. I remember us buying Andy Gray because we all joked at the time that it wasn't the Andy Gray, it was another Andy Gray. And then, a bit later, we sold Andy Gray and, perhaps, there was slightly less joking. But for the life of me I can't remember what happened in between. Apparently, he scored 3 goals. Anyone remember them?
Anyway, enough from me. Over to you. Can you fill in my memories or do you have any obscure offerings of your own?
