What's new

What can we realistically do, from this point, that will bring us a trophy?

It reminds me a little of when Murray was searching for that first major title. I just felt that every time he came up against Federer in a final he was beaten before he'd stepped out on the court.

Then you'd see Djokovic winning his first major against Tsonga in the Australian - and you thought that's what Murray needed - to go up against someone as unsure as himself.

Of course in the end he'd defeat a slightly off colour Djokovic for his first US Open, that being before Djokovic became the dominant force.

I just feel we need a break, and to maybe just snatch that first one with a bit of luck, and almost fall over the line.

Yeah I agree to a point and especially your last paragraph.

To use your tennis analogy though, sport is all about big moments.

It's like a tennis player who seems to dominate the match, but fails to convert enough break points or serves a double fault at a crucial time. The player who plays the important points well tends to win the match.

Until we can do this we'll always be "nearly there".

Keep the squad together, keep the manager, avoid Wembley and play at a tighter ground while waiting for our new stadium and sign one or two real quality signings that will require a fairly serious investment. Eventually we will win the league and trophies.

It's true that we lack the experience to cope with pressure in these situations and that will improve in time... however...

Most teams win trophies because they've spent huge amounts of money. When we come to a game like this it's not rational to expect to win, the deck is so profoundly stacked against us it requires a huge effort and lots of luck. Furthermore, if we had have won, we'd have to do it again against an equally wealthy club.

No matter how good we are, when we go head to head against a motivated team that outspends us 3X+ we'll lose more than we'll win. Some teams might develop a knack of beating rich clubs but they don't do it consistently in high profile matches.

So you either wait until it all aligns for us (as it did under Redknapp when we qualified for the Chumpions league [and that was when Mancity had only a years worth of finanical doping]) or we try to create a situation where teams like Man City and Chelsea don't exist.
Whilst it would be great if financial fair play could operate properly to prevent teams like Man City and Chelsea gaining this advantage, in the very short term I'm going to have to temporarily ditch that principle, because if I had to choose who wins this years FA cup out of the three teams left in it, there is no doubt that I will choose Man City every day of the week.

We need a stronger bench who can change the game when we needed them, yes we have injuries but so did they and look at the difference in the bench.

yes they have more money but we had 55 million pound worth of signings on our bench yesterday of which none of them could have changed the game for us, they bring on Hazard, Costa and Fabregas - serious difference in class.

I am still gutted by yesterday but we got to get a better squad, I fear if we don't win something next year - the likes of Alli, Toby may decide to move on and who can blame them?

We need serious winning mentality / experience in our team - Zaha will improve our squad but doesn't have winning mentality, getting modric back or isco is different class but wont happen whilst we are funding for our new stadium, shame but true

We need to hope the players and poch all buy into this and accept waiting a few years to really be winning things on a regular basis as I don't see much over the next 2 years (Wembley and New season at WHL)

We need to stop panicking.

We need to get real.

Pochettino has built a team that has been getting consistently better and better to the point that we are now justifiably gutted because we didn't beat the richest team in the world. (OK, 2nd richest maybe, but most profligate.)

Unless there is a major exodus this summer, which I don't think there will be, (otherwise the team ethos is less powerful than it appears and we've just got lucky with the majority of results over the last two years) we will continue to improve.

This is the best Spurs team in most of our lifetimes and it is still very young, has a lot to learn, and is visibly improving all the time. We need to get tougher and not treat a defeat as a sign from the gods that we are not allowed to progress. Dealing with defeat, refusing to fall apart when we lose, it's all part of that.

A couple of good signings in the summer to allow us to keep a team shape despite injuries and continuing to improve at the rate we are is all we really need.

Realistically we shouldn't be giving corrupt officials like Atkinson the chance to give penalties and free kicks against us (well the free kick was Tobys fault) in all honesty we out played chelsea they scored from 3 set pieces and a worldie that Matic would never be able to do again if he tried.
My problem is Martin Atkinson how many chelsea games can that man get and let them get away with so much... 19 fouls to our 11 or 12? And he took an age to book Alonso and refused to book Luiz who was a really dirty twat all game.
On our side of things we must learn to take our chances especially with the amount of corners we had & Lloris has to turn up in the big games this is another one he has been awful in.
Anyway let's win the next 6 and see where it takes us #COYS

Financial fair play just seemed to be designed to keep the rich teams at the top and to prevent any other teams joining their elite group. Incredible as it may seem the football authorities and the media just want utterly predictable football with the same teams on top each season. Boring, boring, boring. Just like their beloved Arsenal!

Pochettino has to learn quickly. In the very biggest games I think he has shown tactical naivety by trying to be too clever at times, yesterday was a prime example.

He has worked wonders so far so he can be excused the odd mistake but unfortunately all of this progress will count for nothing unless we win something soon and I'm desperate for us to do that.

This is such an incredible side, I don't want the history books to only have a couple of
top four finishes as their "achievements". People wouldn't look back in years to come and remember a title race, the history would essentially just become a number for a league place finish unless we win something.

A little more squad depth and some tactical improvements in the games that really matter is all we need.

Yeah, I agree, it's game management. Knowing when to stick or twist, all that stuff. But it only comes with experience. And this squad is getting more seasoned, slowly but surely.

The danger is that they suffer too many big losses, of course, and get too scarred.

what we need to do is to have a first 18, and not first 11. our bench has to be as good as our starters, and.only reason why the starters would play and bench sits.has to be because of 1. form, 2. tactical, not because the bench quality player are worse.

Stop making silly errors/mistakes and shoving a bloke at LWB who should never ever have started there, will help.

We do need to strengthen our squad, with just one or two top quality players with real leadership. That said we should lose sight of the injuries we have had this season, Kane (twice), Lamela most the season,Rose, Walker, Winks, Toby, Dembele and that's without mentioning Bembele and Dele suspended at the start of the season. Chelscum have had no European footie and very few, if any, injuries, yet we are still within 4 points of them. Like everyone here I was gutted with yesterday's result, but we are the youngest side in the premiership and will improve, provided we don't sell the key players. We are work in progress and are a side that no-one looks forward to playing.

On a more positive note we did push Chelski hard yesterday and they have to come back down to earth and play a well rested Saints team on Tuesday. Let's just see what happens, and go from there!

There's not much wrong with us now. Just keep going and we'll win something soon. The big problem is Wembley - it looks like we have to play 3 at the back there, so we need good back-ups for Rose and Walker as wingbacks. Trippier will do, but not Davies, IMO. That's actually more of an issue than back-up for Kane. Walker, Trips and KWP on the right looks OK to me. Rose and Davies (and no one else, apparently) looks very weak. Kane, Son & Vincent will be OK if we can't find a better back-up striker, but LWB is a real issue.

We should target the League Cup next season. It's the first trophy of the season which could give us a buzz to go on to bigger things but it's also the easiest to win because of the top 4/5 including ourselves not taking it too seriously. If you do show the competition some respect you could make it to the S/F without facing anyone too difficult and because it's two legs you can afford a bad day at the office.
