Spot on, we're pretty much in a situation where we have to prioritise the cups or the league. Perhaps if the league continues to go bad we can rest players in the Premiership and focus on winning something. Not sure Harry would like to be benched in the league though.

Thing is people are saying what if Kane gets injured I'm thinking more of avoiding that happening. If he did get injured and I dunno Son played ST he'd still have to be rested in cups.
I'm just wildly hoping N'Jie is actually the next Etoo and not a pacey forward who can't play up top on his own.

Will be very interesting where we are come jan window. Can't wait, who thinks we are now in the 6th, 7th and 8th battle now rather than 4th and 5th ?
Sorry, but I think somewhat lower than that. I just find it hard to see us actually beating anyone at the moment. If we let one goal in ( which usually will happen) , we need to score 2 to win and I don't see that happening enough times. We had a ridiculous amount of lucky wins last season and that was mainly down to Kane's incredible run of scoring and Eriksen's free kicks. Not sure we can rely on that again this season - very concerned

He's looked awkward but efficient - apart from against Everton which is essentially a team of defenders anyway.

I'm a big fan of Dier but he's not going to be the long-term answer to the DM role. Not even sure he's the short-term answer.

To be fair that's the first proper game I've seen so far this season . He was a destroyer and I kind of felt bad for him knowing that if we had bought someone he'd be back on the bench. I'm really happy that he now has the chance to make that position his own.

Got to be positive or we have nothing :(

Good news about this window:-

1. Kept Kane, Lloris, Eriksen, etc...
2. Cleared 90% of the deadwood
3. Added squad players Poch will use (Alli, Wimmer, Trippier, Pritchard, etc...)
4. Added much needed pace in N'jie
5. Two bonafide starters in Son and Alderweireld
6. Dier is really growing into CDM and Mason has come back hungry and firing (except for his finishing).
7. We haven't played as badly as points total suggests

So yes there are plenty of positives to this window, and reasons to be hopeful. However we reached this point on Friday morning, and failed to truly capitalise in true spurs fashion (I.e. Fail to capitalise on an advantageous position, like 2-0 vs Stoke)

To leave ourselves woefully short of a ST is near inexcusable really. If Berahino was unlikely then why couldn't we even pick up that Oulare lad Watford took? He'd get Europa games and could become the next Benteke or Lukaku. Even if Berahino went through we could give him games or loan him due to our ridiculous lack of depth there.

CDM was also clearly an area identified, I can kinda let that go after dier's form but we are still short there unless Dembele moves back (sadly there are rumours that Poch doesn't fancy Veljkovic).

It's so disappointing that we have once again missed another opportunity. Glad the THST have issued that bold statement. Questions need to be asked. We pay top dollar and I have no idea whether the club will either make a significant net spend or win a trophy first, and I don't forsee either happening any time soon (but hope I'm wrong).

Alls left now is to hope Poch and the guys start getting more luck on the pitch than we had in WBAs boardroom...

Only hope of Champions League was winning Europa League, albeit a hugely optimistic target. The situation we've now put ourselves in, considering the toughness of the group, is we either run Harry Kane into the ground by playing him every game or basically write off the Europa by playing a player out of position.

Add to that now in terms of DM, what could've been a scenario of playing Dier in Europa in his (in my opinion) future position to get much needed experience playing CB we're going to have to rest him because he's a first choice CM now. I was actually quite angry at idea of Alderwiereld signing stopping Dier's develop as a CB, just never imagined it would be due to this.

We've pretty much written off cup runs now unless we put Kane, a player who's barely started his career here, under ridiculous amounts of strain. We've seen it before with players playing too many games too young and breaking down. I think it's mind blowing recklessness if this occurs, whilst on the other hand incredibly depressing that due to piss poor options we might not get a nice cup run if he is rested.
I think we should right off league position and go for Europa. Were never gonna get too four so go for a trophy

Great post. We continue to evolve in the right direction, albeit slower than some would like.

Evolving at a slower pace is not evolving .. It's extinction. We will lose lloris next summer.
We have literally the same side from last season that got us 5th. The difference now? Those young players now have a bunch of experience under their belt, we've upgraded the talent in defense tremendously and we've also added players to our attack that should be better contributors than what we sold (the equivalent of hot garbage).

So while the gap in 5th and 8th might have a narrowed a bit, it doesn't change anything in my mind that we should still compete for 5th.

... Our rivals have added quality to their ranks with experience, that's the problem.

Levy fucks up. Not supporting AVB through a difficult time. The Berbatov summer. And the BWofDL no doubt have databases bigger than dating Agency's for married men of his misdemeanours, but this blubbing about every transfer window is pathetic. "I would actually have settled for Austin". Fuck me. How about thinking further than next fucking saturday's result ?

Great post in its entirety.

The section above reminds me.... Dimitar Berbatov is a free agent and can be signed outside the transfer window. Apparently he's in Brum discussing a contract with Sherwood.

Let's dump Adebayor's contact and sign up Berba for a season. He'd be the best striker we've been linked with all summer....

Well today proved DL isn't that interested in how the team perform as long as THFC / ENIC make a profit.
To be honest, I'm not really bothered how we get on now this season as long as we don't get relegated, sort of lost
interest.

Pretty risky strategy though considering our poor start. (Not gonna happen) but imagine getting into issues in the league with this young a squad. Think it'll be mix and match again, which will this time likely lead to nothing in either.

There seems to be a number of rather deluded people posting on how overall we have strengthened. Perhaps first 11, but let see in December if those people forget about their positive vibes they are feeling right now or just slip back into the shadows of Spurs community.

Or all of the negative people slip back down into their pit of dispair because we are doing well!

I've no knowledge of the Berahino deal, but it seems to be pretty common to pay the transfer fee over the length of the players proposed contract - very few player transfer fees are paid up front.

So simplistically if we were bidding £20m (all based on installments, no success fees etc) and offering a 4 year contract, then that would be £5m pa for 4 years.

I don't think it was explicit, but when the Guardian (?) gave what was in effect THFC PR response to Pearce's complaints, wasn't it said that Pearce offer for Fazio was similarly structured.

Sorry but your understanding is not correct.

There is no standard about the structure of a transfer fee. It certainly isn't usual to spread it equally over the number of years of a contract. For example, Levy negotiated that Madrid paid all or nearly all of the fee upfront.

I think you have confused the players signing on fee which often is spread across the contract, thereby acting as a loyalty payment for each season completed.

Or, you have confused the internal treatment in the accounts of a transfer fee I.e the amortisation.

However it all happened it'll be interesting to see how things pan out now between Berahino and West Brom. Will we go back in January? If we do I wonder if Levy will do it properly this time or wait until 10pm January 31st to fire a lowball bid in………

The games between the clubs are going to be tasty affairs as well.

Of course its fishy, just reading Donna Cullen's reply to the guy who emailed her basically backs up what Peace has said, we tried to get Berahino on the cheap...
I didn't get that feeling from it at all and thought it gofd she bothered to reply at all

It's where she says we bought Sonny when it became clear WBA were unlikely to sell, we made 2 bids for Berahino today, you think they were top heavy???

Im not that bothered about missing out on Berahino, I am not completely sure he is worth the sums of money being mentioned. One thing does confuse me though is how and why we put all our eggs in just the Berahino basket, I mean we surely have scouts looking and identifying other forwards that are possibly available. Is it not possible for us to have moved on to another target a couple of days ago when it was becoming apparent the Berahino deal was not happening, instead of trying to do a difficult deal at the 11th hour leaving us no other options. It seems a bit short sighted to me.
